The Data Mine

The Data Mine at Purdue University is a learning community designed to prepare students for the evolving data-driven business landscape. Actuarial science students form one of the largest cohorts within the Data Mine, benefiting from a unique combination of project-oriented Data Science seminars and extensive industry interaction.

Through these seminars, students acquire hands-on experience with computational tools such as R and Python. The curriculum covers essential topics including data extraction, manipulation, interpretation, transformation, and visualization, with a particular emphasis on big data sets. These seminars also highlight the importance of effectively communicating data insights, a critical skill in today's data-centric world.

In addition to seminars, the Data Mine offers corporate partner courses where students work on interdisciplinary teams with industry partners, including mentors from insurance companies and other organizations, who guide students through a variety of real-world data-driven projects. These corporate partner courses provide students with invaluable experience and direct exposure to industry practices, which can significantly enhance their readiness for careers in the actuarial field and beyond.
